Hired Judges Available Print E-mail
There are several qualified college students available available to judge Policy/LD/PF debate rounds this fall.  They are students enrolled in an education course this semester entitled, "Direction of High School Speech Activities". These students are required to attend debate tournaments and judge debates/write ballots as part of their class assignments. Therefore, I have several students looking for judging opportunities if you need to hire a debate judge. E-mail me if you need some judges at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it I will get back to you ASAP after I receive your e-mail. I will have students available for every debate weekend in Wisconsin.

Thank you in advance for providing opportunities for my students and hopefully, this will save you some time in finding qualified judges for the season.

Best,
Kay Neal

Changes for 2009-10 Print E-mail

The Wisconsin Debate Coaches' Association has made a number of changes for the 2009-10 academic year. The following is a narrative highlight of those changes:

  • The Wisconsin State Debate Tournament will be a Saturday-Sunday tournament. This was done to increase the time to run the tournament and create a more relaxed schedule. More details will be available as we release the 2009 WSDT Invitation.
  • There is no JV division at this year's WSDT. This does not mean that there cannot be JV divisions through out the season. If JV tournaments occur during the season, students may use the JV division to qualify for the WSDT varsity divisions.
  • A definition of novice was adopted. The defiintion of novice reads: "A Novice is defined as a high school student debating his or her first resolution." This means policy debaters from the prior year are not eligible to compete in novice, they must compete in another division. PF and LD debaters from the prior year are also not eligible to compete in novice policy debate.
  • The qualification rules for State have changed. No longer do you have to reach a certain elimination round or tie the winning record in four person events. In general, to qualify for state your team must have a greater than .500 preliminary round record (4-2, 3-2, 2-1, 3-1, etc) at two tournaments. A proposal was passed at the Fall Meeting to allow MDL and other sanctioned conferences or leagues to use their tournaments as one qualifying leg, so long as the other qualifying leg comes from a WDCA sanctioned event. Please contact Tournament Practices and Procedure Chair, Tim Scheffler with any questions about this process.
  • Registration for the Wisconsin State Debate Tournament will be conducted online through the Joy of Tournaments system.
  • The organization is cracking down on schools who are delinquent in paying their fees and arrears. No team who has not paid dues to either the WHSFA or the WDCA for 2008-09 and 2009-10 will be allowed to compete at the WSDT. Additionally, teams will be required to bring a check or a confirmation of a check request with their team to the WSDT. Teams will not be allowed to compete without a check or a confirmation that a check has been submitted.

Policy Debate

In Policy Debate, students work in pairs (teams) to address the season’s topic, either from the affirmative side (to propose a plan to solve a problem with the topic), or the negative side (to prove how the affirmative’s plan is flawed).  Arguments are highly-structured (with specific speeches and cross-examination periods for each debater), and based on credible, factual evidence.  Read

Lincoln-Douglas

Lincoln Douglas debate centers on a proposition of value, which concerns itself with what ought to be instead of what is.  Values are ideals held by individuals, societies, governments, etc. Neither side is permitted to offer a plan (a formalized, comprehensive proposal for implementation); rather, they should offer reasoning to support a general principle.  Read

Public Forum

Public Forum Debate is a team event that advocates or rejects a position posed by the monthly resolution topic. The clash of ideas must be communicated in a manner persuasive to the non-specialist or “citizen judge”, i.e. a member of the American jury.   Read
